High School Student Volunteer Program



Applications for 2018 Winter High School Program will be accepted 
for a two weeks only 

 October 2 - October 16, 2017

There has been a eligibility change to  the Student Volunteer Program 

The program continues to grow and due to the tremendous amount of applications we receive each session, we will only be accepting local area high school students who have a graduation date of the following year

To participate in the winter  2018 program your  high school graduation date must  be 2019

Thank you for your interest in Lancaster General Health High School Student Volunteer Program. We are proud to offer a volunteer program for students since 2005.

 

The program is designed to offer students an opportunity to explore healthcare careers, gain leadership and job skills, and see an overview of the daily operations of the hospital or any of our outpatient facilities.  You will work side-by-side with a clinical staff member (nurses, patient care assistants, therapists, technicians or supplemental staff) who will mentor you throughout the program. 
 

During the Student Volunteer Program, you will learn about many healthcare careers in areas such as:

  • Cardiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Endoscopy
  • Labor & Delivery
 
  • Nursing
  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatrics
  • Critical Care
 
  • Rehab Services
  • Trauma Services

 

Student Requirements

High school students with a graduation date of the following year with a sincere interest in healthcare are encouraged to apply.   Our Student Volunteer Program is offered twice a year.

The Winter  student session will begin January 15, 2018 and will end
May  31, 2018.  In order to participate,  the students must have a graduation date of 2019 and be able to begin the program in January.  
All applicants will be notified by mid December, of the status of your application.  


 The application package must be received (not postmark) in the Volunteer Services Department by October 16, 2017.  Applications received after the deadline and incomplete applications will not be considered. 

Students must submit the following to the Volunteer Services Department
 

  • Completed Student Volunteer application
  • Provide documentation of immunization records
  • Copy of recent high school transcripts to support the educational requirements of the selected healthcare career
  • Completion of a one page essay which explains your interest in pursuing a career in the healthcare profession
  • Letter of recommendation from a healthcare professional,  high school guidance counselor, or other professional (not a relative) that speaks of your ability and dedication to serving others
  • Signed parental consent on application

Students must Commit

  • Commitment to volunteer a minimum of  50 hours throughout the program

How to Apply

For enrollment in the Student Volunteer Program, download and complete our application.   Please return all completed information (as indicated in Student Requirements above)  to the Volunteer Services Office
located on the first floor of the Duke Street Hospital or  send by mail under one mailing to:

Note:  High School Students may only participate in the Student Program one time so that we are able to provide this opportunity to other interested applicants. 
   

Acceptance into the Program

If you have been accepted into the Student Volunteer Program, you will receive an informational acceptance letter and medical testing consent form. You will be asked to:
 

  • Complete a drug, tobacco screening test, and 2-step Tuberculosis test
  • Provide proof of mandatory influenza vaccination (this is only required if you are volunteering during the winter program)
  • Sign release allowing LGH to request a background check if 18 years or older.  You will need to know your social security number at orientation.
  • Participate in a mandatory 4 hour Volunteer Orientation scheduled for January 4, 2018  from 4:00 p.m. to  8:00 p.m.   If you are unable to attend the mandatory orientation you will be unable to participate in the program.  There will be no exceptions. 
  • Purchase a uniform from Volunteer Services
  • Sign an agreement to volunteer at least 50 hours
  • LGH has a tobacco-free policy.  All newly hired volunteers will be screened for nicotine usage and must be tobacco-free.   
  • If you are selected to volunteer at Women and Babies Hospital or in Pediatrics, you are required to submit Act 33 Clearance (child abuse)
  • If you have not been a resident of PA for the past 10 years you will also  need to submit to Act 73  (FBI fingerprint) at the volunteers expense. (current cost are approximately $27.50)


Completing the Program

At the end of the program, you will be required to report all your volunteer hours, complete an evaluation documenting your experience, and return your badge.
A written evaluation of your performance that will be shared with your high school guidance counselor
 

A complimentary $500 scholarship to Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences  is available to students who satisfactorily complete the High School Student Volunteer Program.   The student must be enrolled in a degree program.
