Can a person exercise too much? The question is being asked after the recent death of a runner in the London marathon and the death of a world champion swimmer from Norway earlier this week.

Every year, a patient of mine has a heart attack or stroke..... and it is almost always unexpected. Americans suffer more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes annually. Heart disease is responsible for 1 of every 4 deaths in this country. But you don't have to be counted among those numbers—if you pay attention to your heart ABCS.

I was saddened when I learned that Paula Tshudy, a graduate of our Cardiac Rehab, had passed away on Feb. 9. She was the woman who initiated the support group that has helped many people who have survived cardiac events. The group was inspired by how she felt after her own heart attack in 2005.

People who carry excess weight around the middle–those who are apple-shaped instead of pear-shaped–are at greater risk for several diseases. Having a large waist is associated with a host of potentially serious health issues, such as heart disease, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.

A recent analysis of 11 clinical trials of calcium supplementation to treat osteoporosis found a link between the supplements and heart attack risk. But experts seem to agree that a lot more research is needed to determine if calcium supplements can cause heart attacks.

The pneumonia shot protects you from pneumonia, an infection of the lungs usually caused by viruses or bacteria. People who are more likely to have serious complications from pneumonia should get the shot, including those with chronic diseases, anyone age 65 or older, and children under 2 years old.
