Oncology Chaplaincy Fellowship

Context for Fellowship

The Lancaster General Health Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, which opened in July 2013, is a distinctive outpatient facility that brings together expert physicians, leading-edge technology and innovative programs, while also supporting the mind, body and spirit of our patients. A team of caring and compassionate professionals guide and manage a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Cancer services are integrated by bringing medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, and other cancer specialists to one location. A dedicated oncology chaplain is part of the team that also offers survivorship, supportive services programs, and wellness programs that focus on whole-person care. At the Cancer Institute, approximately 6,000 patient visits take place each month, with about 300 new patients enrolled each month.

Inpatient services at Lancaster General Hospital include Intensive Care Unit and a dedicated oncology nursing unit. When cure is no longer an appropriate focus, the Palliative Care Services team often becomes involved. The team, consisting of physicians, nurse practitioner, chaplains and social workers, recently was granted "Advanced Certification for Palliative Care" by The Joint Commission. The reviewer was impressed by the team’s multidisciplinary composition since its inception in 2006.

Hospice & Community Care provides quality care to individuals of any age, coping with any serious illness, and their families. With a focus on comfort and quality of life, expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes, care is provided in a patient's home, nursing home, in the hospital, or in Hospice & Community Care's Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center. Hospice patients are assigned to a team of professionals who provide physical, emotional and spiritual support. While Hospice care is provided to anyone with any serious illness, the Fellow’s exposure will be with those patients with terminal cancer.
