About Our Staff:  

Michael Horst, PhD, Director, Administration Director, Clincial IT Coordinator

Dr. Horst earned his doctorate degree from Penn State University, a master’s degree from Penn State University College of Medicine and a master’s degree from Illinois State University. In addition to Director of the Research Institute, he is also the Director of CME at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Horst has provided statistical consultation for organizations, taught college business related courses, and published/presented in various forums. His research interests include applied statistics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to health research.

Barbara Martin, PhD, Director of Research Administration

Dr. Martin has a PhD in epidemiology, with an emphasis in the design and conduct of clinical studies. She earned her degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, then joined the faculty of the school for 8 years. There she ran multicenter clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. She returned home to Pennsylvania in 2008 to become Executive Director for the Lancaster Heart and Stroke Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by local cardiologists with the intent of improving cardiovascular health through clinical research and community programs. In 2013, the Foundation merged into Lancaster General Health. Dr. Martin’s efforts are now directed at supporting research throughout Lancaster General Health.

Roy S. Small, MD, FACC, FSCAI, Medical Director of Clinical Research

A leading national expert in the management of heart failure, Roy S. Small, MD, is an interventional cardiologist and serves as medical director of the heart failure clinic and the medical director of the heart failure service at Lancaster General Hospital. He is the director of the heart failure clinic and the medical director of the heart failure service at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Small has been a principal or co-investigator on more than 70 studies in areas ranging from stents and angioplasty to pacemakers and drug therapies. He is currently the principal investigator of several clinical trials primarily involving the management of heart failure. He is the co-director of medical research and board member of The Lancaster Heart & Stroke Foundation. He has published articles in leading cardiovascular medical journals and presented papers at Heart Failure Society of America Annual Meetings and the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Sessions.

A former commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, Dr. Small was an assistant professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. He completed his internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center and did his interventional training at The Mayo Clinic. He received his medical degree from St. Louis University and is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology

Work Experience: Member of AHIMA with over 20 years in the medical field. Implemented and supervised all aspects of the HealthLine department at St. Joseph Hospital. Started and ran a home medical transcription business for over 15 years before joining Lancaster General Hospital in 2006
