Dental residents help provide low-cost care to uninsured patients

Dental resident Dr. Matt Mease discusses a treatment plan with patient Mariann Wolf.

Lancaster General Health has partnered with the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center to provide low-cost dental services to patients who do not have insurance.
Students in LCCTC’s Dental Assistant Program work with licensed dentists from the LG Health Dental General Practice Residency Program in an open-bay clinic where Dental Assisting students have the opportunity to observe and participate in patients receiving dental care.
Services, which include fillings, extractions, crowns, dentures and root canals, are available to patients ages 12 and older on Mondays.
“The dental clinic allows Lancaster County CTC to give back to our community and also to instill the value in our Dental Assisting students that everyone should have access to top-quality dental care,” said Dr. Marie Kelly, acting director for dental hygiene.
Susan Scott, program manager for the dental residency program, said the program allows residents to gain the experience they need in providing a range of services, many of which are no longer covered by Medicaid. The residents also perform similar services at the Water Street Mission twice a month on a pro bono basis, she said.
“These clinics are a great way for people who don’t have insurance to take care of their teeth, which is so important,” Scott said.
