Palliative care resources now available to all LG Health staff
2/3/2018

Shanthi Sivendran, M.D.

New resources are available to help all members of the LGH Medical & Dental Staff care for seriously ill patients -- while also earning free continuing education credits.

Research increasingly supports the value of open, continuing discussion of prognosis, goals and preferences with patients who are facing a serious illness. However, talking with patients about the end of life can be difficult and uncomfortable.

Lancaster General Health is now a member of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). This membership provides our entire staff with unlimited access to a wide range of benefits and resources to help improve quality of care and quality of life for patients living with serious illness and their families.

“It’s important for everyone in our health system to have good palliative care skills,” said Shanthi Sivendran, M.D., of LG Health Physicians Hematology & Medical Oncology. “Palliative care is really beneficial in terms of improving quality of care and reducing overall costs of care. And in some cases, it can actually help people live longer.”

CAPC’s online clinical training in palliative care skills includes courses in pain management, symptom management, communication skills and the relief of suffering from dementia and COPD. The courses are case-based and interactive, and provide free CME/CEU credits for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, case managers and social workers.

The Master Clinician series is a monthly, detailed case study and live Q&A with subject matter experts and an open discussion between participants.

You can access these and other resources by registering for a user account. If you need assistance setting up your account, contact membership@capc.org or call 212-201-2674.

These resources are available through a generous donation to the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute from Caroline Nunan Hill.
