Sports injuries happen to athletes of all ages. Some injuries are the result of trauma; others are due to overuse of muscles or joints. You can prevent many injuries by making sure you are trained and fit enough to participate in the sport and that you are wearing protective equipment. If you are injured, our sports medicine specialist can help get you back on the path to recovery.
Sports medicine: Not just for elite athletes
We provide non-surgical care for a wide range of injuries to bone, muscle and other soft tissues, including:
- Broken bones
- Carpal tunnel pain
- Hip, knee or shoulder pain
- Rotator cuff injuries
- Torn ligaments
We take a comprehensive approach
We assess and treat injuries with the latest techniques in sports medicine. For your convenience, we offer on-site ultrasound for diagnosis and treatment. Treatments to reduce pain and inflammation may include nerve blocks or steroid injections. For arthritis in the knee, we may use viscosupplementation—an injection of hyaluronic acid, which helps lubricate the joint. To promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints, we may use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. PRP uses platelets from the patient’s own blood to release growth factors and stimulate repair.
As necessary, we also work with physical and occupational therapists to help the patient return safely to activity.
If surgery is recommended, we can refer you to an appropriate Lancaster General Health surgeon.
Concussion assessment and management
In the case of head injury, prompt evaluation and treatment are critical. We can evaluate and help you manage a concussion for the best changes of full recovery. It is also important to prevent re-injury, especially before the brain has fully healed. We use an innovative technology to help support return-to-play decisions. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a scientifically validated computerized testing tool that provides objective information for assessing recovery following concussion, managing post-concussion symptoms and determining readiness to return to sports participation, school and work. The ImPACT test measures symptoms, memory, processing speed, reaction time and other factors. We can use pre-play ImPACT testing to establish a baseline for athletes involved in high-risk, high-impact sports.
