Travel medicine

Overseas travel can be a wonderful experience, but it can also expose us to bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites that can cause infection. Even just getting on a crowded plane, bus or train exposes us to possible infection. Depending on your destination, you may want to get see a doctor to determine how you can lower your risk of getting the infectious diseases that may be common in the region you are visiting.

Common travelers’ ailments

Some infections occur both at home and abroad. Others are more likely to occur in certain parts of the world. The most common illness that travelers experience is diarrhea. If you are traveling, you may want to protect yourself against hepatitis, yellow fever, influenza, typhoid fever or malaria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization offer current information on travel health risks. Vaccinations and other preventive medications are available to help reduce the risk of many infections.

Timing your visit

Advance planning is important. If you are getting vaccinated against certain infections, the vaccines need time to work. If you may be exposed to malaria, you need to start taking preventive medication before you start your trip. Plan to see a doctor at least six weeks before you leave on an overseas trip.
