Neuropsychology

Neuropsychological assessments help us understand how a disease or injury affects your brain function. We usually recommend testing when there are symptoms involving memory or thinking that may be due to medical, neurological, psychological or genetic causes.

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Brain tumor
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Chronic substance abuse
  • Concussion/traumatic brain injury
  • Downs syndrome
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Toxic chemical exposure

Behavioral Medicine

Our behavioral medicine program focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic medical conditions. Using cognitive-behavioral therapy principles, we help patients reduce stress, manage pain, comply with health management recommendations, and make lifestyle changes important to their health and well-being.

We also work closely with our fibromyalgia and Healthy Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery programs.

Treatments Offered
  • Biofeedback uses sensitive electrical equipment to help you become aware of your body’s reaction to stress, pain and relaxation
  • Relaxation techniques include deep breathing, meditation or prayer, and even hypnosis to help reduce muscle tension, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and ease pain
  • Stress management involves making lifestyle changes that reduce stressors, and learning to react differently to stressors

Pre-surgical Psychological Evaluations

Some major surgeries may require a psychological evaluation to assure you are ready for the surgery and able to make necessary lifestyle changes for the procedure to be successful. Surgeries that require pre-surgical evaluation and education include:

  • Bariatric weight loss surgery
  • Deep brain stimulation
  • Intrathecal morphine pump implantation
  • Shunting for normal-pressure hydrocephalus
  • Spinal cord stimulator implantation
What to Expect

The evaluation will vary depending on the procedure you are considering. Generally, we ask about your current lifestyle, your understanding of lifestyle changes that will be necessary after the procedure, your ability to cope with stress, and your support system. We also assess your ability to follow the treatment regimen necessary for a good outcome.
