Neuropsychological Assessments

Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty profession that focuses on brain functioning. A clinical neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in how behavior and thinking skills are related to brain function. With two board-certified neuropsychologists as part of our staff, we address the impact of brain disorders on behavior and mental functions such as language, memory and perception.

Neuropsychological assessments are designed to help us understand how a disease or injury affects your brain function. Testing is usually recommended when there are symptoms or complaints involving memory or thinking that may be due to a number of medical, neurological, psychological or genetic causes. It may be requested to help your doctors and other professionals understand how the different areas and systems of the brain are working. Individuals with the following medical or neurological conditions are frequently referred for evaluation:

  • Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Brain tumor
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Chronic substance abuse
  • Concussion/traumatic brain injury
  • Downs syndrome
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Toxic chemical exposure

What to expect

A very detailed assessment of abilities is performed, identifying patterns of strengths and weaknesses important in diagnosis and treatment planning. Testing will be helpful in understanding your specific situation. A typical neuropsychological evaluation will involve assessment of the following:

  • Attention and concentration
  • General intellect
  • Higher level reasoning
  • Language
  • Learning and memory
  • Mood and personality
  • Motor and sensory skills
  • Visual-spatial skills
