Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluations

If you are considering certain major surgeries, a psychological evaluation may be necessary to make sure that you are ready for the surgery and able to make lifestyle changes that are necessary for the procedure to be successful. Some of the surgeries that require pre-surgical evaluation and education include:

  • Bariatric weight loss surgery
  • Deep brain stimulation
  • Intrathecal morphine pump implantation
  • Shunting for normal-pressure hydrocephalus
  • Spinal cord stimulator implantation

What to expect

The exact nature of the evaluation will depend on the procedure that you are considering. Generally, we will ask about your current lifestyle and your understanding of the lifestyle changes that will be necessary after the procedure, your ability to cope with stress and your support system. We’ll assess your ability to follow the treatment regimen necessary to have a good outcome and look at any mental or emotional issues that could affect your outcome. We will also answer any questions and address any concerns you have about your surgery and lifestyle changes.
