Psychological Services for Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery for weight loss is a major, life-changing procedure. Psychological services can be useful before and after the surgery to support lasting positive results.

Pre-operative evaluation

Most doctors and insurance companies require bariatric surgery candidates to have a psychological evaluation before having the procedure. This evaluation is designed to make sure that you understand the decision you are making and do not have any conditions - such as impulse control problems or an eating disorder - that would keep you from sticking with the lifestyle changes that you will need to make and adhere to following the surgery.

Post-surgery support

Professional psychological counseling and peer group support can help you make the changes you need to reach your weight loss goals and sustain your weight loss. This may involve identifying and learning how to avoid food triggers, learning how to manage stress or deal with uncomfortable feelings without overeating, and staying motivated.
