Joint Injections

To ease the pain of certain types of arthritis or injuries, it can sometimes be helpful to inject medication directly into the affected joint. Joint injections are commonly used to treat:

  • Ankles
  • Elbows
  • Hands/wrists
  • Knees
  • Shoulders

Joint injections may also be given to the spine at the neck, mid-back and lower back.

Medications for joint injections

Usually the injections contain time-release corticosteroids, which are anti-inflammatory drugs that may decrease the amount of fluid and cells in the joint. For osteoarthritis, injections of drugs containing hyaluronic acid, a lubricating substance, may help reduce pain and increase mobility.
