Colorectal surgery may be necessary to correct problems with the colon or rectum, both of which are parts of the large intestine. We perform colorectal surgery to address:
- Hemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas
- Fecal incontinence/prolapse
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
- Colon, rectal and anal cancer
Colon cancer screening
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings beginning at age 50, or younger for people at higher risk for developing colon cancer. Although there are several screening methods for colon cancer, the gold standard for screening is a colonoscopy, which enables the doctor to see and remove any polyps in the rectum or colon. During this procedure, the patient is under mild sedation. If no polyps are found, the test should be repeated every 10 years. An annual fecal occult blood test is also recommended.
A focus on positive outcomes
When appropriate, we use minimally invasive techniques and technologies, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System, to minimize pain and speed recovery.
