Gallbladder Surgery

Your gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ located under your liver. It stores bile, a fluid made by your liver, that helps to digest fat. As your stomach and intestines digest food, your gallbladder releases bile through the common bile duct, which connects your gallbladder and liver to your small intestine.

Problems in the gallbladder include gallstones and cholecystitis (inflammation). Fortunately, the gallbladder is an organ that you can live without.

Surgical removal

To treat severe gallbladder problems, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove your gallbladder. This procedure, also known as cholecystectomy, is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States. In the majority of cases, we are able to perform this procedure using minimally invasive, laparoscopic techniques, which use smaller incisions and a video camera.

Virtually scarless surgery

Thanks to advances in robotic laparoscopic technology, we now offer da Vinci® Single-Site™ cholecystectomy. LG Health was the first in the county and among the first in Pennsylvania to offer this breakthrough procedure, which enables us to remove the gallbladder through one small incision in the belly button. The procedure is as fast and safe as traditional laparoscopy, but it results in virtually no scarring. With robotic assisted surgery, patients typically experience a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer blood transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal daily activities.
