New exercise equipment at Columbia High School football field will benefit both students and community members

6/7/2012 10:00:20 AM

Officials from Columbia School District and Lancaster General Health held groundbreaking ceremonies on June 12 for a new $37,000 outdoor exercise system to be located on the Columbia Junior/Senior High School football field on 9th Street, Columbia. The total body workout exercise system is scheduled to be completed this fall and will be available for use by students, for school coaches during team training, and for members of the community.

More than 20 years ago, LG Health had donated the original equipment, which had to be removed since the treated wood structures had deteriorated. LG Health will fund the new exercise system, made with durable materials that are safer and require less maintenance, and manufactured by Playworld Systems®.

“For many years we have partnered with the leaders and citizens of Columbia Borough and the Columbia School District, sharing a common goal of promoting exercise and healthier lifestyles for our community,” said Thomas E. Beeman, LG Health President & CEO. “When this new equipment is installed, everyone, from students to children to grandparents, will be able to come to the Columbia High School football field and exercise at their own pace and skill level.”

The five exercise stations will have easy-to-understand instructions and will be designed in accordance with the FITT Principles -- Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. Each station will have 24 exercises, for a total of 120 exercises, enough for a healthy 3-day-a-week work out. Participants will be able to exercise at their own pace from 15 to 60 minutes a day, and skill level (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

The exercise system will be installed by Benchmark Construction, Inc.
