LG Health Bariatric Surgery Program granted ACS accreditation

3/13/2013 9:13:09 AM

LANCASTER, PA, March 2013 -- Lancaster General Health’s Bariatric Surgery Program, led by Bariatric Physician Specialists, 2150 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, was granted accreditation as a Level 1 facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This designation means Lancaster General Health and Bariatric Physician Specialists have met the essential criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program and that its institutional performance meets the requirements outlined by the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program.

“This accreditation confirms that Bariatric Physician Specialists has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality care for its bariatric surgery patients,” said Dr. James Ku, medical director of LG Health’s Bariatric Physician Specialists and Healthy Weight Management Program. “As an accredited bariatric surgery center, we provide the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients and the support needed to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, from pre-hospital to postoperative and follow-up care after the patients go home.”

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has recognized Bariatric Physician Specialists and allows expanded Medicare coverage of bariatric surgery for beneficiaries of all ages who have been diagnosed with other health problems associated with obesity. Medicare coverage has been limited to procedures performed in facilities certified by the American College of Surgeons or the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.

The Bariatric Surgery Program is part of an overall Healthy Weight Management Center where advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques, including gastric bypass, gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy, are performed by Drs. James Ku and Joseph R. McPhee. Medical Bariatrician Dr. Lawrence Wieger oversees the practice’s Medical Weight Management Program, which offers an alternative to weight loss surgery for individuals who are clinically obese, but are not interested in or eligible for surgery.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. Its achievements have placed it at the forefront of American surgery and have made the College an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 79,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
