LANCASTER, PA, December 2013 -- Lancaster General Hospital was awarded the highest level of implementation and adoption of an advanced patient electronic medical record environment from HIMSS Analytics. During the third quarter of 2013, LGH was among 2.2 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database to receive the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award.
The Stage 7 Award, the highest granted by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics, was independently validated during a December 5 site visit to the hospital. HIMSS measures and evaluates the progress and impact of electronic medical records (EMR) systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. LGH will be recognized at the 2014 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on Feb. 24-26, 2014, in Orlando, Fla.
“This award represents the dedication and teamwork of our physicians and employees to transform the delivery of healthcare. The adoption and use of electronic tools and information coupled with process changes have had a dramatic impact on our ability to support our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Thomas E. Beeman, Lancaster General Health President & CEO. “Stage 7 affirms our strong commitment to patient safety, quality of care, process improvements, and technologies enabling us to accomplish these goals.”
In 2005, HIMSS Analytics launched the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) to track adoption of EMR applications within hospitals and health systems. The EMRAM scores hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database on their progress in completing 8 stages (0-7), with the goal of reaching Stage 7. Beginning in 2009, the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award honors those hospitals achieving the highest EMRAM level.
Stage 7 hospitals deliver patient care without the use of paper charts; are able to share patient information by sending secure, standardized summary-record transactions to other care providers; use their vast database of clinical information to drive improved care delivery, patient safety clinical decision support, and outcomes using business intelligence solutions; and are best practice examples of how to implement sophisticated EMR environments to provide clinicians with advanced information for better decision making and patient care.
“The level of medication safety achieved at Lancaster General Hospital sets a new bar for medication safety in the U.S., with 100 percent integrated IV pumps, a leading edge service, one of less than ten hospitals in the United States that have such comprehensive intelligent pump integration for their 911 IV pumps,” said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president, HIMSS Analytics. “LGH has over ten years’ experience with bar coded medication administration, bar coded blood products administration as well as bar coding human milk for maximum safe practices. With full bar coding for pharmacy inventory management, LGH sets a high bar for others to meet. Their medical staff integration, driven by their ambulatory and acute care EMR implementation, has positioned them to succeed in risk sharing contracts.”
LG Health uses a single integrated electronic record from Epic which gives caregivers fast online access to vital data about their patients as well as provides patients information about their health whenever they need it. The secure online portal, MyLGHealth.org, offers patients a convenient way to contact their doctor’s office, view test results, refill medications and schedule appointments.
