Technology

Our goal is to keep women healthy. We are also here to help women who have received a cancer diagnosis. Through our nurse navigators, breast imaging nurses and network of resources and services located throughout the LG Health system, we connect you to a comprehensive dedicated range of services that help you overcome the disease and return to the things that you love. Your specific course of treatment may include one or a combination of the therapies listed below.

  • The goal of each of these therapies is to:

  • Remove or shrink cancer

  • Stop further growth

  • Prevent spread of cancer

Radiation Therapy

Lancaster General Health Radiation Therapy, also located in the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion, offers leading-edge technologies to eliminate cancer while preserving healthy tissue. Radiation services include advanced technologies such as MammoSite® Radiation therapy. MammoSite delivers a limited amount of radiation directly to the site where the breast tumor was removed, allowing a larger dose of radiation therapy in a shorter period of time. This minimizes exposure of healthy tissues to radiation during treatment.

Surgery

If your condition requires surgery, the specific surgery performed depends upon the stage, size and location of the lump or tumor. Our experienced physicians will provide answers to your questions and help you make an informed decision about any necessary surgical treatment, including oncoplastic, reconstruction and plastic surgery.

Systemic Treatments

Some patients may benefit from systemic medication to reduce the risk that a breast cancer may have spread beyond the breast. Medical oncologists are cancer specialists who focus on systemic treatments – those treatments that touch the entire body. Examples of systemic treatments include chemotherapy, antihormonal therapies and biologic therapy. Most chemotherapy works by attacking cells during the cell growth and division process. Anti-hormonal therapies use medication which blocks the production of estrogen which may be a growth factor in certain types of breast cancer. Biologic therapy uses laboratory-produced substances that target specific features of the cancer cell to destroy them, minimizing damage to the healthy cells.
