Survivors share experiences through Facing Cancer Together


Dr. Randall OyerIn the latest Facing Cancer Together Expert Journal from Lancaster General Health, oncologist Randall Oyer, MD, has heard three themes from cancer survivors over the past year: A shared experience, A feeling of empowerment, and a hope for the future. Dr. Oyer explains more about each theme in his latest Expert Journal.

Facing Cancer Together is a nine-month interactive, community education effort bringing in-depth information and resources to the people of central Pennsylvania. Joining LG Health are Pinnacle Health of Harrisburg, PA, and WellSpan Health of York, PA, and media partner, WITF Public Media.
 

Facing Cancer Together includes original productions for TV, radio and print plus interactive web resources featuring trusted clinical experts, including LG Health physicians and staff.

Jay Bucher, the President of the Lancaster General Health Foundation, is happy to report that philanthropy is alive and well, despite the economic challenges we face. Donations to the new cancer center have been very strong.

  Julie Bolton is an oncology nurse at Lancaster General Health's Infusion Center. Her mother was a nurse and was Julie's inspiration for becoming a nurse herself after watching her interact with patients.

Mindfulness helps cancer patients

 

Breast cancer nurse navigator

 
Mindfulness is an ancient form of meditation that is about bringing awareness to a present experience. Practicing this technique can help cancer patients gain some control during their journey with the disease.

   Lynn Fantom, has been helping cancer patients, mainly breast cancer patients, for 8 years. She loves being able to help a person navigate their physical and emotional concerns after a cancer diagnosis.

Lynn doesn't think of herself as the typical "tattoo chick," but treated herself to a tattoo for her 40th birthday. It's in honor of the many breast cancer patients she's helped over the past 8 years as a nurse navigator.
