Types of Treatment
Lancaster General Health offers specialized treatment programs for various cancers including breast, lung, colorectal, prostate and gynecologic cancers, among others. A comprehensive program including medical, surgical and radiation oncology, as well as access to clinical research trials, ensures that each patient receives the care that he or she needs.
Surgery
If your diagnosis requires surgery, surgical specialists provide care focused on providing patients with the best possible outcome. When appropriate, minimally invasive techniques are used to minimize pain and speed recovery. Open surgical techniques are also employed when indicated.
Technological advances, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System, allow surgeons to perform complex procedures through tiny openings, allowing faster recovery. These procedures are effectively used in treating prostate and gynecologic cancers.
Medical Therapy
Our experienced staff of board-certified medical oncologists work closely with referring physicians and the treatment team to provide each person with an individualized plan of care. Chemotherapy therapy may be administered in our new state-of-the-art infusion center, located at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion. This setting is staffed by chemotherapy-certified nurses who deliver expert care in a warm and supportive environment.
Radiation Therapy
Between 30 to 50 percent of all cancer patients require radiation oncology. Radiation oncology can be administered externally (beam radiation) or internally (brachytherapy). The overall goal is to destroy cancerous cells, while perserving as much healthy tissue as possible and minimizing treatment side effects. The radiation onocology team at LG Health comprises board-certifeid physicians, nurses, physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists and a nutritionist. Advanced technologies such as TomoTherapy®, high dose rate therapy (Mammosite®), and Gamma Knife® bring patients the most innovative treatments, all delivered in a caring and convenient setting.
