We recognize that excellent cancer care requires a comprehensive, compassionate and integrative approach. Counseling services are an important component of care with the goal of promoting wellness and reducing distress for you and your loved ones.
All patients living with cancer experience some level of distress. A cancer diagnosis presents many challenges to you and your loved ones and comes with a range of feelings. Fear, anger, anxiety, depression and confusion are common. Many of these emotions can be overwhelming and difficult to manage. Finding healthy ways to cope can positively affect your course of treatment, and improve your quality of life during what can be a very challenging time.
Our professionally trained counselors are available to you and your loved ones to provide support in coping with the many life changes that occur for people living with cancer.
Licensed Clinical Counselors
Our Licensed Clinical Counselors are clinicians with specialized training in working with individuals, couples and families. We offer individual, couples and family counseling.
What to Expect
Counseling sessions can enable you to learn the tools necessary to navigate through this time. You may learn new ways to cope, to manage your emotions, such as anxiety and sadness, to improve communication with your team and to find support in talking with your family and friends about cancer.
The goal of family counseling is to better understand one another. Family sessions can be a way to honestly open up with one another during the difficult time of coping with cancer.
Licensed Clinical Counselors are located at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. A psychiatrist is available for consultations.
There may be an opportunity to briefly meet the counselor when you are at the Cancer Institute for one of your regularly scheduled appointments. If you have any questions or need more information, a brief meeting with the counselor may be helpful.
To schedule an appointment for Counseling Services, please speak with a member of your cancer care team who can make a referral or you may call 717-544-9423 to speak with one of our counselors.
