Breast Cancer Surgery

If you require removal of a malignant breast tumor, our surgeons use the latest techniques that offer several advantages—faster healing, better outcomes, and shorter, easier follow-up therapy. We’ll answer your questions and help you make an informed decision about any necessary surgical treatment.

Breast Surgery

Our experienced breast surgeons will remove as much of the cancer as possible and some of the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. Surgery is often combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy and/or radiation. Our breast surgeons perform:

  • Lumpectomy—removal of the lump and a rim of normal tissue.
  • Partial mastectomy—removal of part of the breast.
  • Simple mastectomy (total mastectomy)—removal of the entire breast.
  • Modified radical mastectomy—removal of the breast and some underarm lymph nodes.
  • Axillary dissection—removal of the underarm lymph nodes.
  • Oncoplastic surgery—for patients requiring substantial tissue removal, helps maintain breast contours.

Oncoplastic surgery also helps more women become candidates for MammoSite® radiation therapy, a post-surgical treatment with fewer side effects and a shorter treatment cycle than traditional radiation therapy. Mammosite is also used for catheter placement in the breast that can aid in quicker physical recovery.

Breast reconstruction

Oncoplastic surgery is offered when the tumor is small relative to the size of the breast. For women with larger tumors, or those who require mastectomy, our surgeons offer a variety of reconstructive options based on the patient’s preference and health status. These include:

  • Breast reconstruction during or after cancer surgery
  • Breast implants
  • Use of the patient’s own tissues
