I FINALLY got sick and tired of being "sick and tired"
Growing up, I made bad decisions in food choices and didn't understand the benefit of exercise. I'd rather watch TV than go outside and play.
I FINALLY got sick and tired of being "sick and tired.” I had a three year-old son and I was winded walking up the stairs. I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I decided to go to my first bariatric information session at LG Health in early 2011. I signed up for the session, but then got scared and decided not to go. The following month, I was determined to go and I went. I was very impressed and decided to sign up for a consultation that night. I decided to have the adjustable gastric band surgery.
One of the things I quickly learned, that I was doing this for "other people" in my life--my husband, my child, my siblings, my friends, etc., and after being in the program for a month, I gained two pounds. I was devastated. I talked to Ryan (exercise physiologist) about it. He was so encouraging and reminded me this had to be about me or it wasn't going to work. I took those words to heart and from that day, I truly COMMITTED to the program for ME! The weight fell off from that point.
The staff in the program kept reiterating that this surgery was a "tool" not some kind of miracle fix. If I went back to eating like I did before or stopped exercising, I would probably put the weight back on. I had tried many other diets before and I would lose 30 lbs. and gain 60 lbs. I was sick of the "yo-yo" dieting. I wanted to get healthy and be around when my son graduates high school, college and gets married. I also wanted to fit in some of my old clothes from high school. I always kept one box of clothing that I would say "someday I'll fit back into those" and when that day came, I literally cried I was so happy!! (They are now too big for me!)
Dr. McPhee is one of the BEST doctors I have ever worked with. He is one of the most knowledgeable, down-to-earth, confident, kind, funny and great-listening doctor. I cannot thank him enough for his guidance and wisdom through this process. Also, the ENTIRE bariatrics staff has been wonderful, extremely positive and upbeat, and they are pleasure to go through this journey with. I felt from day one that they wanted me to succeed. I can't say enough about all of them, from the receptionist, schedulers, nurses, case managers, exercise trainers, dietitians, case managers, psychologists and of course the surgeons.
I think the the most valuable component of the program for me were the pre-operative classes. The binder we got at the beginning became my "bible" and I referred to it often. It was/is beyond helpful and extremely informative.
Now that I have lost this weight, I enjoy exercise!!! It's not that I couldn't exercise, I just hated the thought. I used to be a "couch potato". I would spend hours in front of the TV (most of the time eating). Ryan and Cory really helped changed my prospective of exercise, and also showed me that "small steps" lead to "big steps" and would help me achieve my weight loss goals. I'm a "gym rat" now; I go at least 4 days a week! I LOVE it!
Losing this weight has given me the confidence to know that I have the tools to stay healthy and truly learn to LOVE myself. I used to feel like such a failure, especially when it came to weight loss, but I feel successful now. I love to share with others and tell them how this program can help.
Deciding to have the gastric band has been one of the best decisions I ever made. It has given me my life back! It has taught me not only how to lose weight, but how to keep it off, and to me that is priceless!
