I was always the big kid in school
As a kid, I played sports year-round (football, soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.) and through college. After college I was still involved with sports, but slowly began putting on more weight. I have progressively gotten bigger over the last 20 years.
I also think my childhood affected the way I ate later. We regularly had fried foods and I ate plenty of it. When I was younger, I was active enough to keep the weight off. As I grew older, I continued eating the same way but became less active overall. I was also taught that you always cleaned your plate. I lived by this principle for most of my life.
Time for a change
My wife, Lori, and I have been together for 12 years and we have both been overweight. We decided to look into bariatric surgery as a couple. It was something I thought about for a while, but had never acted on it. The biggest motivators in making this decision were our kids. They are nine and six years old. I started seeing some really bad habits developing in my kids when it came to food and eating. I knew where that road would lead and I knew I had to make a change if I was going to help them be healthier. I had also started seeing some medical problems in myself that I knew were directly related to being obese.
A great experience and great results
Lori and I attended an information session and after the session I did some research to see what the entire process entailed. We also attended a support group together. Dr. McPhee and the staff are amazing. They immediately put us at ease. All of the staff are wonderful. I would recommend LG Health for anyone considering bariatric surgery.
To date, I have lost almost 100 lbs. I enjoy having more energy. I am now running, and just completed my first 5k! I enjoy going out in the yard and playing with my kids. I have the energy to get up off of the couch and to go do things, whether it be doing chores, playing with the kids, or just taking a walk with the dog.
This weight loss has really changed my life. Since before this surgery I have made life-altering decisions. I have given up all fried foods, all sodas, and really embraced eating new and healthy things. I exercise four to five times every week, including running and weight training. I eat correct portion sizes and have started to eat more vegetarian foods. I have developed a "goal board" for myself. I set a long-term goal, a mid-term goal, and a set of weekly goals.
I enjoy being able to walk around and feel at least a little bit proud of the way I look and knowing that if I continue on the path I will soon be healthier than I have ever been in my adult life. I enjoy knowing that the likelihood of me being able to see and know my future grandkids has greatly increased.
