Success Stories

Mark's Story

My weight had always seesawed as a child.  Around eight to 10 years-old, I was heavy, but when I was in high school, my mother had to taper the sides of my shirts so they would look good; I was almost too thin. In my childhood, all celebrations came with special meals, desserts.  We had lots of comfort food.  When I was young and my body was growing, my metabolism was faster, shaking weight off was easy.  The next growth spurt would take care of it.  You didn’t exercise, you went and did stuff.  You didn’t go to the gym, you rode your bike or played tennis, golfed, hiked.  Having a paper route and carrying heavy loads for long distances every day helped to make me “thin”.

Jen's Story

I have been a very overweight person all of my life. Our family is from the south and they like their southern-style cooking…so well-balanced and healthy meals were not often on our menu. I was active as a child and enjoyed playing sports, but my weight held me back from my abilities, as well as the confidence to put myself out there. By high school, I was around 300 pounds. I don’t think I ever changed because I grew accustomed to it and that is how I defined myself. I had a lot of friends and besides the weight, I was very happy. I just don’t think I realized at the time how much happier I could have been.

Patty's Story

As a child we had to eat everything on our plate, and the food wasn't always the healthiest; at that time no one had any idea how to eat healthier things. We did "play"; a lot and that gave us a lot of activity, but no structured exercise, except what we got in school. I was teased a lot by kids at school for being fat and ugly--it was a really tough childhood (they should see me now).

Sergio's Story

My heaviest was 360 pounds in 2004. I went on the South Beach Diet at that time and lost well over 85 pounds, but the weight did not remain off, although I never reached the 360 pound mark. I led a sedentary lifestyle sitting around and snacking out of boredom. I did not enjoy exercise since I felt out of place at gyms (fat man working out?), so I avoided working out.

Traci's Story

My struggle with weight loss was what I was known for. This struggle consumed me, my life, and my happiness for too long and I couldn’t take it any longer. It was time to make a change and take control of my life. Growing up in an active household meant that most of my meals were on the go and it didn’t leave a lot of nights with a well-balanced meal around the table. Unfortunately when this active lifestyle ended, the poor eating habits didn’t and it eventually caught up to me.

Eliza's Story

I FINALLY got sick and tired of being "sick and tired.” I had a three year-old son and I was winded walking up the stairs. I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I decided to go to my first bariatric information session at LG Health in early 2011. I signed up for the session, but then got scared and decided not to go. The following month, I was determined to go and I went. I was very impressed and decided to sign up for a consultation that night. I decided to have the adjustable gastric band surgery.

Linda's Story

I was born with severe hip dysplasia, and was told I’d never walk normally without assistive crutches...12 years of physical therapy and many pairs of orthopedic boots later, I was able to walk normally, but still had many leg problems. My whole life seemed to be ‘inactive’ – even as a young teen one of my favorite hobbies was watching old movies from the 30’s and 40’s – and I always was “the chubby kid”.

Rich's Story

I was always the big kid in school

As a kid, I played sports year-round (football, soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.) and through college. After college I was still involved with sports, but slowly began putting on more weight. I have progressively gotten bigger over the last 20 years.

Lori's Story

I've been overweight all my life. I can remember trying many different diets throughout the years: Weight Watchers®, physician-monitored diets and a variety of others that would work for a short time and then it would all come back. In my mid-twenties, I was diagnosed with Graves disease and from there I'd teeter back and forth between hyper- and hypothyroidism, making losing weight even harder and causing me to lose my motivation quickly.

Karen's Story

Growing up, I ate very well. I was never 'thin' but I was not obese. I was active in high school in marching band, but constantly obsessed about my weight. I would go through phases where I would starve myself, do only Slim Fast, then eat only bad things on Fridays.
