New hybrid operating room brings the most advanced technology to Lancaster
In Lancaster General Hospital’s new state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Room (OR), cardiologists, vascular surgeons and cardiac surgeons work side by side to perform procedures that require both surgical and interventional cardiology expertise.
Designed for vascular and cardiac patients, the Hybrid OR combines the capabilities of a cardiac catheterization lab with a cardiac surgery operating room, offering patients who need complex cardiovascular surgeries new options.
Traditionally, when an artery is blocked, blood flow is restored with heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft surgery) or intervention (stenting). However, hybrid revascularization allows doctors to combine the advantages of surgery with the advantages of stenting in a single procedure, which helps patients to heal and recover faster.
Other procedures performed in the hybrid OR are done by vascular surgeons. The vascular surgeon performs thoracic and aortic stent graphing, balloon angioplasty to repair aneurysm and clear blockages in the arms and legs, and assists cardiologists in placing cardiac devices.
This setup also enables the use of da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery for heart bypass surgery and the ability to transition from minimally invasive to open vascular or cardiac procedures without having to move the patient.
The hybrid OR also makes it possible for LG Health to offer a new procedure for heart valve replacement, called TAVI, or transcatheter aortic valve Implantation (also known as TAVR) TAVI requires the advanced technology of a hybrid OR to visualize placement of the valve through a small chest wall or groin incision.
