Driver Safety Assessment

Driver Safety Assessment

Even a small change in vision, memory, reaction time or physical ability can lead to dangers on the road. If you are concerned about your own or a loved one’s ability to drive safely, LG Health offers a driver safety assessment that provides the information you need to make wise choices.

As part of the assessment, an occupational therapist evaluates advanced life skills including:

  • Visual skills

  • Physical skills

  • Attention and concentration skills

  • Reaction time

Based on the results, the therapist may recommend that your doctor refer you for a behind-the-wheel evaluation to determine if you need special equipment or follow-up training.  A behind-the-wheel evaluation assesses the ability to operate vehicle controls, respond quickly and accurately, obey traffic laws, and recognize and understand road signs and regulations. This test may be taken with any Pennsylvania-certified driver trainer at a driving school. We will provide contact information.

How to prepare for an evaluation

Allow one hour for the occupational therapy evaluation. Bring reading glasses to the appointment. The patient must be accompanied by a licensed driver. Should a behind-the-wheel evaluation be recommended,  a valid driver's license or learner's permit is required. A physician referral is necessary for both the occupational therapy assessment and the behind-the-wheel evaluation.
