Headache Care

Headache Care

Lancaster General Health offers comprehensive resources for the diagnosis and non-narcotic treatment of all types of headaches in adults, including migraines, tension-type headaches, cluster headaches, chronic daily headaches, and facial pain disorders.

Led by a neurologist who is fellowship trained in headache medicine, our headache team consists of neurologists, a clinical psychologist, physical and occupational therapists , the LG Health Sleep Medicine Center, nutrition and holistic therapy practitioners. Our focus is working with, you to find the best ways to eliminate or successfully manage your headaches.

What to expect at your first appointment

On your first visit, the neurologist will review the records from your referring physician and the medical and headache history forms you submitted, and conduct a complete physical and neurological exam. This helps us develop a personalized, headache treatment plan.

Treating your headache

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for those suffering from headache and facial pain disorders. We offer a wide range of services to treat your headache, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Massage therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Non-narcotic pharmacological therapy
  • Botox injections
  • Nerve blocks
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Dietary, stress management and other lifestyle modifications

Our Policies:

Opioid Use
As a member of the South Central PA Opioid Awareness Coalition,  we promote a non-narcotic policy for our headache care program. This is in keeping with the Center for Disease Control and the American Academy of Neurology guidelines recommending strongly against the use of narcotics for chronic non-cancer pain. In fact, science shows that any regular use of narcotics more than doubles your risk for developing chronic daily headaches. For these reasons, our headache care program does not accept any individual who is currently taking narcotics and will not prescribe narcotics for management of headaches.

Disability and Related Forms
There are over 30 million migraine sufferers in the United States. More than eight million Americans visit their doctor for headache each year. There are less than 500 headache specialists in the United States. As a result, we focus on direct patient care and do not complete disability or Family Medical Leave Act paperwork. We will work with your primary care provider and share all of your medical records as requested.
