Sleep Studies

Overnight sleep studies

The Sleep Medicine Center at Lancaster General Health performs sleep studies (or polysomnograms) by physician referral at two convenient locations, the Downtown Outpatient Pavilion and Kissel Hill Outpatient Center. You will spend the night in a comfortable, state-of-the-art sleep study room with a private bath and its own temperature control. Both facilities include accommodations for individuals with physical disabilities.  During the study, we will record diagnostic information while you sleep. A nurse or technician will affix electrode patches to measure:

  • Brain wave activity
  • Eye and chin muscle movements
  • Breathing and heart rhythm
  • Leg muscle activity

A small temperature gauge near your face measures airflow and snoring. An adhesive patch on your finger measures oxygen levels in your blood.

Preparing for your sleep study

If possible, do not nap in the afternoon before your study, and avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening. If you have any special dietary restrictions, please tell your technician. Please remove any nail polish, and avoid lotions or powders. Please bring:

  • Any medications you normally take
  • Your own nightclothes, robe and toiletries
  • Your favorite pillow, if you desire

Getting your results

At the Sleep Medicine Center, a board-certified sleep medicine physician reads and interprets all sleep study results. The Center keeps your information and results confidential.

After the sleep study, your physician will review your results with you and discuss further treatment recommendations.

If a sleep specialist referred you to the Sleep Medicine Center, you will meet briefly with one of our sleep specialists the morning after the study. Based on your results, it may be necessary to remain at the center for additional studies.

At-home sleep studies

If you need to have your sleep study at home, our staff can provide information on a portable sleep study option.
