If an X-ray is like a still photograph, fluoroscopy is like a video. It uses a beam of radiation passed through the body to enable your doctor to see an organ, muscle, bone or joint in motion. Fluoroscopy may be used alone or in addition to other diagnostic procedures or treatments. Fluoroscopy may be used with:

  • Arthrography to visualize a joint
  • Barium X-rays to visualize the digestive tract
  • Cardiac catheterization to visualize the flow of blood through the coronary arteries
  • Hysterosalpingogram to visualize the female reproductive organs
  • Intravenous catheter placement to guide the insertion
  • Intravenous (IV) pyelogram to visualize the urinary tract
  • Lumbar puncture/myelogram to guide the injection
