Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

What are the benefits of Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy is a unique form of physical therapy that allows the body to slowly heal while reducing the recovery time. The buoyancy of the water supports the patient and allows for easier standing, walking and strengthening without causing damage to healing injuries. The warm water promotes muscle relaxation, increases circulation and decreases pain sensitivity. Patients will feel a resistance of the water which allows for effective strengthening of many muscles at one time. The hydrostatic pressure can improve circulation and reduce swelling. Overall, the aquatic environment will stimulate body awareness, balance and trunk stability.

Aquatic therapy has been proven as an effective treatment and rehabilitation for those who have had or have:

  • Decreased Conditioning
  • Cognitive Impairments
  • Head Injury
  • Muscle Spasm
  • Reduced Endurance
  • Reduced Strength
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Amputation
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Pain
  • Decreased Coordination / Balance Deficits
  • Knee, Hip, or Shoulder Replacement
  • Orthopedic Trauma
  • Pediatric Development Delays
  • Stroke
