Driving Safety

Meet your Be Well Team

Driving Safety

Driving a vehicle is a gateway to independence. It is a privilege and a responsibility. Even small changes in vision, memory, reaction time or physical ability can lead to dangers on the road. If you are concerned about your own or a loved one’s ability to drive safety, Lancaster General Health offers a two-part driver safety assessment program that provides the objective information you need to make smart choices about the ability to drive with or without special driving aids.

Who can benefit

Our behind-the wheel driving safety assessment and occupational therapy evaluation services are appropriate for individuals with conditions such as:

  • Age-related illness or impairment
  • Amputation
  • Bone or joint disease
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Dementia
  • Head injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spina bifida
  • Stroke

About the program

The first part of the program is an occupational therapy advanced life skills evaluation of:

  • Visual skills
  • Physical skills
  • Attention and concentration skills
  • Reaction time

Based on the results, the therapist may recommend that your doctor refer you for a behind-the-wheel evaluation to determine the need for special equipment and/or follow-up training. The assessment evaluates your ability to operate the vehicle controls, respond quickly and accurately, obey traffic laws and recognize and understand road signs and regulations. You can take this test with any Pennsylvania-certified driver trainer at a driving school. We will provide you with contact information.

How to prepare

Allow one hour for the occupational therapy evaluation. Bring reading glasses to the appointment. The patient must be accompanied by a licensed driver. The behind-the-wheel evaluation requires a valid driver’s license or learners permit.

It’s easy to schedule an appointment

A physician referral is necessary for both the occupational therapy assessment and the behind-the-wheel evaluation. To schedule an appointment, call Willow Lakes Outpatient Center at (717) 517-5334 or Aquatic and Physical Rehabilitation at (717) 544-3103.
