Medical/Surgical Unit

Patients whose clinical condition is stable enough to leave the ICU are placed on one of several designated “trauma” floors throughout Lancaster General Hospital. The nurses on these floors have special expertise in how to manage trauma patients, specifically as it relates to their orthopedic injuries, head injuries, wound management or other specific injuries. The doctors and nurses on the medical/surgical units work in partnership to transition the trauma patient from the emergency phase of their illness to the rehabilitation phase of care. During this period, many other ancillary services work with the trauma patient. These include physical and occupational therapy, social services, pastoral care, psychiatry, nutrition and many other specialty services that work to provide the optimal environment for the trauma patient to transition back home, or if necessary, a short stay in a rehabilitation center or extended care facility.
