Family Information

In addition to the emotional effects of dealing with a sudden trauma, family members often face logistical challenges as a result of the unexpected event. Our trauma team is here to care for your loved one and to help your family through this difficult time. We will answer all of your questions and arrange for family meetings to discuss the plan of care.

To help families cope, the Trauma Center offers the following:

  • 24-hour support from hospital chaplain.

  • Dedicated trauma case manager and social worker to answer questions and assist in planning for discharge and home care.

  • Special waiting area and private consultation room in the ED, as well as private space in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) waiting area and the Skylight waiting room on the hospital’s second floor (for patients in surgery).

  • Free wireless internet access.

  • Open visitation in the trauma ICU.

As a family member, you are an important part of the care team and may be asked to make decisions on behalf of the patient. The suggestions below may make your experience smoother:

  • Reach out to friends and family for additional support. Take care of yourself, so you can be here for your loved one.

  • Bring a notebook to help you remember important information and questions to ask at an appropriate time.

  • Ask questions of the care team. We are here to help and want you to understand what is happening.

  • Assign a designated person to receive regular reports from the care team and to communicate those to family and friends. Patient privacy laws prohibit staff from sharing information with well-meaning friends who may call for updates.
