Trauma & Acute Care Surgery > Screening Alcohol Use

Screening Alcohol Use

  • The objective is to provide drug and alcohol screening to all trauma activation patients over the age of 13 years. Early identification of high risk patients will enable brief intervention and/or referral to treatment with the goal to reduce the reoccurrence of injury patterns.
  • Alcohol misuse is the leading risk factor for serious injury in the US and the third leading cause of preventable death and accounts for more than 75,000 deaths annually.

  • Research has shown that facilitates incorporating SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) are reporting a 50% recurrence rate with reduced binge drinking episodes and drinks consumed per week. This prevention initiative indicates SBIRT helps to lower healthcare costs.

  • We, as a trauma center, are an ideal setting to capture the teachable moment generated from an injury through screening and brief intervention. Our programs aim to identify problem drinkers and reducing future alcohol-related injury.
