Emergency Department

Reducing the time patients remain in the emergency department (ED) can improve access to treatment and increase quality of care. Delays before receiving care in the ED can increase risks and discomfort for patients with serious illness or injuries. There are two indicators that we monitor to ensure that patients who visit our ED receive high-quality care.

Procedure LGH State National
Median Time from ED Arrival to ED Departure for Admitted ED Patients 278 min 334 min 338 min
Median Time from Decision to Admit to Admission  121 min 127 min 132 min

Data reflects current CMS Hospital Compare website, which shows data collected 4/1/2014 – 3/31/2015.

Median Time from ED Arrival to ED Departure for Admitted ED Patients

Many inpatients admitted to a hospital start their journey in the emergency department (ED). Reducing the time spent in the ED allows the patient to move on to the next level of care and start their journey to recovery. A shorter time in the ED also helps reduce the possibility of overcrowding in the ED.

This measure focuses on the process that occurs  from the time an ED patient who has been designated to be admitted, enters the ED until they leave for the inpatient nursing unit.

Median Time from the decision to admit a patient in the ED to that patient is admitted

Many of the inpatients admitted to a hospital start their journey in the emergency department (ED). Reducing the time spent in the ED allows the patient to move on to the next level of care and start their journey to recovery. A shorter time in the ED for the patient will also help to alleviate the possibility of overcrowding in the ED.

This measure focuses on the process from when an ED patient has been designated to be admitted until they leave for the inpatient nursing unit.
