Mark Burlingame, M.D., recently was recognized for implanting more than 1,000 Carpentier-Edwards PERIMOUNT design pericardial valves. According to the Edwards Lifesciences implant registry, he has placed 1,041 aortic and 251 mitral implants since 1985.
“Reaching the 1,000 plus implant mark is a great milestone,” said Edwards spokesman Ed Hennessey, who presented Dr. Burlingame with a commemorative plaque in March.
Dr. Burlingame, who practices at Cardiothoracic Surgery, chairs the LGH Department of Surgery. He estimates that he has performed at least 7,000 open-heart surgeries since the program’s inception in 1983.
“I attribute my success in cardiac surgery to my colleagues and my fantastic OR team, heart team, and all the nurses and support staff who help our patients get well and back to normal life,” Dr. Burlingame said.
