Beginning in July, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health will add three questions to our patient intake/registration information in Epic that will allow patients, if they choose, to inform their health-care team about their sexual orientation and gender identification (SO/GI).

Patients are not required to provide this information. The goal, however, is to allow patients to offer this information so the health-care team has a better picture of a patient’s unique health needs and challenges. By asking patients about their SO/GI, we can help reduce disparities in care within our community.

Prior to the new SO/GI fields launching in Epic, training sessions will be available for all clinical Epic users. The training will build communication skills, awareness and cultural competency regarding patients who identify as lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender. It provides information on how to respectfully ask SO/GI questions for data collection in Epic.

Registration is available in Knowledge Link. Search “Enhancing LGBTQ Patient Care and Communication” to view available sessions.

If you do not have access to KnowledgeLink, please email onlinelearningservices@lghealth.org  to register. Include your name, contact information and the session you would like to attend. You will receive confirmation of your registration via email from onlinelearningservices@lghealth.org.
