Whether for home or work, our “to-do lists” can sometimes seem overwhelming.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to managing our daily stresses. But there is growing evidence that a strong sense of personal resilience – or the ability to bounce back after facing a challenge – can help reduce stress and enhance overall well-being.
While some people are more naturally resilient than others, the good news is that we all can work on building this important skill.
Here are some of the ways I reduce stress and take care of myself:
Set limits. Many professional and personal obligations are non-negotiable. I have learned that sometimes it’s OK to say no to some optional events and tasks. I make an effort to prioritize and commit to doing the things that are most important to me.
Get moving. Taking quick breaks for physical activity throughout the day helps me stay energized. For example, I might stretch for five minutes during a conference call. And I always take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Make time for what’s important to you. This could be anything from taking a fitness class to attending your child’s sporting event or meeting a friend for coffee. For me, it’s doing yoga. When life gets really busy, it’s even more important to find a few minutes to relax and recharge.
Take it outside. When I really need a break, I go outside and take a short walk. Being outside and experiencing nature reinvigorates me so I can refocus on what I need to accomplish.
Depending on your role, some of these ideas might not be realistic for you. Sometimes it’s difficult to break away from patient care or a family challenge, so you might have to get creative with ideas to reduce stress and prioritize what’s important to you.
At your team huddles or in more casual conversations, consider sharing ideas for coping with the pressures and challenges we face. I encourage you to find the strategies that work best for you.
