Due to a recent CMS policy change, Medicare now covers MRIs for patients with implanted cardiac devices.

The CMS announcement comes after several studies found that MRI poses minimal risk in patients with pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators and similar devices. These patients previously were covered for MRIs only as part of a clinical trial or if their implanted cardiac device met specific FDA requirements.

This change will make it easier for the estimated 2 million U.S. patients with implanted cardiac devices to receive MRI scans. It is expected that publicity surrounding the CMS announcement will lead to increased patient questions and demand for MRIs.

MRI Group will offer MRIs to patients with implanted cardiac devices under specific criteria and when provider resources are available. Because additional safety measures are required, MRIs initially will be offered to these patients during limited hours.

Providers’ patience and understanding is appreciated. If you have any questions, please call Karen DiGiovanne, Director of Operations, 717-544-0277.

Providers reminded to wear ID badges

ID badges help patients identify providers and allow access to restricted areas and computer systems; therefore, it is important to secure your badge.

LG Health policy requires that provider identification badges be worn during work time, on the front of the person above the waist.  Badges should be secured during non-work time and not left in places of general public access. Providers are responsible for reporting lost or stolen badges.
