From Jan Bergen, President & CEO

In 1893, the Rev. D. Wesley Bicksler convened 60 local business and community leaders to organize the creation of Lancaster General Hospital. In its first year, the new hospital admitted 53 patients, with some arriving by horse-drawn ambulance.

Much has changed in the past 125 years, but that same passion for serving our community still drives Lancaster General Health today.

As we mark the 125th anniversary of LGH, I'm certain that our founders would be awed by the sophistication of our organization today. Despite monumental advances in care delivery, our mission remains fundamentally the same: to increase our community's access to high-quality health care.

At LG Health, we take our legacy very seriously. We care not just for the health of individuals or families, but for our entire community. As we look ahead to the future, we must continue to make every decision with that mission in mind.

In this milestone year for LG Health, I encourage you to visit our interactive historical timeline, which offers a fascinating recap of the last 125 years. I think you'll enjoy reading the interesting facts from our history, and seeing what has changed and what has remained the same.

Just like our founders, we are led by a Board of Trustees made up entirely of community volunteers. And even as our service area continues to grow, we remain deeply committed to Lancaster City, operating just four blocks from our first "home" on North Queen Street.

In 1893, patients who were poor received free care at LGH. Today we continue to serve as a resource for our community, regardless of ability to pay. Last year, just one of our many community benefit programs provided $9 million of free care to patients.

Fittingly, our yearlong 125th anniversary celebration is designed to touch everyone in our community, including you. I hope you will attend our Sept. 22 community celebration, which will include a special preview just for employees and their families.

Our forefathers founded Lancaster General Hospital to improve quality, access and the cost of care. More than a century later, our goals reflect those very same priorities. Please join me in celebrating LG Health's rich history, the enduring vision of our founders, and our continuing commitment to our community.
