Achieve Your Health Goals With A 3-Step New Year’s Plan

There is no time like a New Year to reflect on the past and think about how you want to move forward with your life, health or career. Whether you call them New Year’s resolutions or goals, the only sure-fire way to accomplish your dreams is to create a plan and stick to it.
The Problem With New Year’s Resolutions
Many of you may have already thought about what you would like to accomplish this year and chances are, it has something to do with improving your health, losing weight, or becoming more active. Unfortunately, most resolutions don’t involve a clear-cut plan. A goal without a plan of attack is likely to leave you feeling frustrated rather than empowered to make a change. A 3-Step Goal-Setting Plan
- Start with a vision...and a vision board. Goals are typically set because we don’t like our current situation and want something better. But too often people start to feel discouraged because it’s hard to imagine what things will look like once you actually achieve that goal. That’s where a vision board might come in handy.
Looking at images of the things you want to achieve can become a very powerful way imagine that vision as your reality. If your goal is to lose weight, the idea is not to fill your board with unrealistic images of thin models. Instead, try cutting out pictures of the healthy foods you will eat, the recipes you might try, and pictures of clothing that you will wear once you can fit into a smaller size. Your vision board can also contain quotes and other motivational images that make you feel empowered and confident in your ability to change.
Write it down. There is real power in putting your goals down on paper. They suddenly go from being something you WISH you could do to something you have DECIDED to do. Next, start to ask yourself “how will I do this” and write down all of the action steps you will take to get to that goal in very clear detail. Suddenly your goal statement becomes a roadmap that will take you exactly to your destination.
Use the power of positive self-talk. Ever notice how that little negative voice pops up whenever you are trying to do something new? The voice of self-doubt can often be your worst enemy when it comes to making changes.
But, there is a way to change negative self-talk into positive. Instead of writing your goals down as if they will occur in the future, turn your goals into present-tense statements.
For example, “I want to eat healthier so I can lose 50 pounds” might become “I choose healthy foods daily and am easily maintaining a healthy weight.” Read the statements daily in the morning as soon as you wake up; in the evening before bed; and anytime you feel the negativity creeping in. These positive statements will quickly turn into positive thoughts and actions.
