For the past several years, Lancaster General Health has joined the American Heart Association and other community partners to celebrate National Walking Day on the first Wednesday in April.
This annual event encourages Americans to start walking for health and well-being. Walking or engaging in other forms of moderate exercise for 30 minutes each day is a proven way to increase physical fitness, maintain a healthy body weight, promote mental health, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
On April 5, MyHealthyLiving, the employee wellness program at LG Health, organized group walks throughout the day at the LG Health Suburban Pavilion, BURLE, Lancaster General Hospital, Family Medicine at the Buck, Walter L. Aument Family Health Center, and LG Health Norlanco. LG Health employees and community members took short, brisk 15-30 minute walks to show how easy it is to fit more physical activity into the day.
That evening, LG Health also participated in a community walk at the HACC-Lancaster Campus’ walking trail, a 1-mile loop with fitness stations along the way. LG Health donated wellness prizes, shared nutrition and physical activity information, and brought along Crunch the apple mascot to take photos with children.
To encourage community members to keep walking throughout the spring and summer, LG Health is launching a local chapter of PA WalkWorks, a community walking program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This new program kicks off with a celebration at Farnum Park at 5:30 pm on Monday, April 24, to walk the designated 2-mile loop through Southeast Lancaster City. You can find a walking map of the route and an activity log for tracking your walks on the website.
