On Saturday, December 16, Lancaster General Health partnered with AAA Central Penn and The Common Wheel for the fourth annual Maryann Caldwell Holiday Bike Drive. The event, named after Maryann Caldwell, a long-time school nurse in the School District of Lancaster and mother of the founder of The Common Wheel, donates bikes to children in need from the School District of Lancaster.

This time, more than 150 bikes were donated by members of the community and local police departments. The bikes were refurbished by The Common Wheel, a non-profit community bike center, before being donated to the children.

On the day of the event, students in need of a bike who were identified by the School District of Lancaster were able to select a bike, get fitted for a helmet and participate in a bike rodeo. The rodeo, organized by LG Health staff members and AAA Central Penn, featured a safety course where children could learn to ride their new bikes safely.

At the rodeo, nurses and health educators from the LG Health Wellness Center assisted new riders in learning hand signals, practicing stopping and starting, looking backwards for traffic, and avoiding unexpected objects in and on the road.
