Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is participating in several Spring events that educate community members on the benefits of staying healthy through physical activity and exercise.

Summer Reading items

LG Health partnered with Lancaster Libraries to fund and print over 10,000 Summer Quest Reading Program booklets. The Summer Quest Program goal is to help Lancaster’s youth discover Lancaster trails, stay active and learn about nature. Throughout the booklet, LG Health suggests yoga poses for each trail to encourage healthy physical activity. Summer Fitness Quest Booklets are available now at the 17 public Libraries of Lancaster County, the Library System’s Bookmobile and BeREADy Rover early literacy van.

At the Open Streets Lancaster event in May, Lancaster City streets were closed to cars and open for walking, bicycling and playing. The annual event, sponsored by LG Health, encouraged community members to think of streets as community spaces, not car lanes. LG Health collaborated with the City of Lancaster and Lancaster Bikes! to host a “bike block” where children and adults could safely learn how to use a bicycle. Over 7,000 community members attended the event.

In early June, LG Health sponsored the Riverlands Trail Festival at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.  Having safe places for physical activity near home is essential for healthy living, and Lancaster County is privileged to have biking, hiking and kayaking trails in the Susquehanna Riverlands region.  At the festival, community members explored the Northwest River Trail, raced in canoes along the Susquehanna River, listened to live music and discovered new healthy foods. LG Health and Lighten Up Lancaster provided bike education materials, handed out pedometers and educated community members on the importance of staying active by walking and biking on trails.
