Preparing For Your Stay at Lancaster General Hospital

What to Bring For Your Hospital Stay

Use this checklist to help prepare for your stay:
  • Photo identification
  • Health insurance information
  • Copy of any advance directive, durable power of attorney and living will documents
  • List of medications with doses and frequency
  • List of doctors and relatives with phone numbers and email addresses
  • Robe, slippers and toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Eyeglasses, hearing aids and dentures (and cases labeled with full name)
  • Cane and walker (labeled with full name)
  • Medical equipment, if absolutely necessary

Patient Medication

Any medications you need will be ordered by your provider. Medications, including over-the-counter drugs, should not be brought to the hospital.

Family Members

Consider how your family will be involved in your care, care planning, and decision making, and share this information with our staff. It is often helpful to identify one person who can communicate with other family members.

Personal Items

The best way to protect your personal property is to leave it at home. Lancaster General Hospital is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items (e.g., electronic devices, clothing, money, jewelry, dentures, eyeglasses/contact lenses), even if accidentally damaged by a staff member or visitor.

Tips to help you protect valuables and other items you bring to the hospital:
  • Put dentures and eyeglasses/contact lenses in protective cases when you are not using them. If you need a case for your dentures or glasses, please ask.

  • Items can easily get lost or damaged when on the food tray, on the bed or in the bed linens. Please pay extra attention to your items in those areas.

  • You can ask nursing staff to place valuable items in the hospital safe. Lancaster General Hospital is not responsible for your personal property, unless, upon your request, the nursing staff took the item to be placed in the hospital safe and it then was lost, damaged or stolen while in the hospital’s possession.

If one of your possessions is misplaced or lost, please notify your nurse immediately. You may also notify Lost & Found at 717-544-4942.

What to Expect During Your Stay

Information Desk

Visitor information and concierge services are available at the Information Desk in the hospital’s James Street Lobby (1st floor). We can assist with:

  • Maps and directions
  • Food options
  • Overnight accommodations information
  • Transportation needs
  • Area attractions
  • Fax services
  • Notary services (health-related documents for in-house patients only

The Concierge Desk is open weekdays, 9 am – 5:30 pm and can be reached at 717-544-7376

Family Lounges / Waiting Areas

Patient care areas located in the hospital have their own family lounge waiting areas. All lounges have Wi-Fi access. Designated family lounge areas for family members and friends who are waiting for patients in surgery are located on:

  • SkyLight, James Street, 2nd floor
  • Orthopedic Waiting Center (2nd floor)
  • Children’s Play Area (in the Orthopedic Waiting Center)

We ask that children are always accompanied by an adult.

Mail, Flowers and Gifts

A volunteer will deliver mail, packages and flowers to your room daily. Mail received after you go home will be forwarded to your home address for 10 days. Outgoing mail may be taken to the nursing station or given to your attending nurse. Postage stamps are available in the gift shop.

Because of latex allergies and choking risks, we do not permit latex balloons in the hospital. You may have Mylar foil balloons anywhere.

If you have concerns while you are here, speak with your physician or a staff member right away.

Voice your compliments or concerns on our toll-free Care to Share telephone line, 855-657-4273. Hearing about your experience in your voice will help us recognize what we are doing well and make improvements in areas where we may have fallen short.

If follow-up is needed, the Care to Share line also offers access to our patient representatives.

Discharge and Post Stay Information

Discharge

Planning for discharge begins when you are admitted to the hospital. Throughout your stay, our staff will work with you and your family to assess your needs and identify resources to meet those needs.

Pharmacy

The Convenience Pharmacy fills prescriptions for patients being discharged from Lancaster General Hospital (including the Emergency Department); patients at Family Medicine Downtown, Comprehensive Care, and Healthy Beginnings; and LG Health employees/dependents, and volunteers. The pharmacy is located on the first floor of Lancaster General Hospital across from the elevators. The pharmacy accepts most insurance plans and is open from 7 am – 6 pm, Monday through Friday from 9 am – 3 pm, Saturday. It is closed Sunday and holidays. The phone number is 717-544-5929.
