Living Donor Program - Saving More Lives

Living donor means a living person donates part of their liver or a kidney to a transplant patient. The Penn Medicine Transplant Institute has one of the largest and most experienced living donor transplant programs in the country. For many, receiving a transplant from a living donor is the best option for survival and the fastest path to transplant, before patients get too sick or their disease progresses.

For a liver donor, a portion of the liver is donated and the remaining liver grows back to its original size within weeks. For living kidney donation, Penn Medicine also offers a paired kidney exchange program to help more patients receive a kidney match. This program is an option for kidney transplant patients and donor pairs who are not blood and/or tissue-type compatible.
