Women & Babies Hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient surgery to address a variety of gynecologic conditions. When appropriate, we perform surgeries using minimally invasive techniques, including da Vinci® robotic technology, to reduce pain and shorten recovery times. Some of the conditions we treat surgically include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Bladder and pelvic floor disorders
  • Infertility
  • Cervical and uterine cancer

Myomectomy to Remove Uterine Fibroids

Myomectomy is a common alternative to hysterectomy for surgically removing fibroid tumors while preserving the uterus, allowing for future pregnancy.

A uterine fibroid is a common type of benign (non-cancerous) tumor that develops within the uterine wall. Uterine fibroids occur in up to one third of women and are the leading reason for hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) in the United States.

Myomectomy is most often performed through a large abdominal incision (open surgery). Laparoscopic myomectomy offers a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery, but is usually not an option for women with large fibroids, multiple fibroids, or fibroids in difficult- to-reach areas.

Hysterectomy to Remove the Uterus

Hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus, is the second most common surgical procedure for women in the United States. The procedure may also include removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or select lymph nodes.

Common gynecologic conditions like fibroids (non-cancerous growths in the uterine wall), endometriosis (non-cancerous growths in the uterine lining) or prolapse (falling or slipping of the uterus) are often treated with hysterectomy.

Hysterectomy is also often recommended as a treatment for early-stage gynecologic cancers including cervical, endometrial (uterine) and ovarian cancers. The type of cancer and its stage, determine the treatment options.

Robotic-assisted Myomectomy or Hysterectomy

If your doctor recommends myomectomy or hysterectomy, you may be a candidate for a minimally invasive surgical option using the da Vinci robotic-assisted platform. This state-of-the-art technology is designed to help your doctor perform the most precise and least invasive procedures available today.

For most women, da Vinci myomectomy or hysterectomy offer numerous potential benefits over traditional surgical approaches, including:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss and need for transfusion
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities
  • Small incisions for minimal scarring
