Lancaster General Health offers a driver safety assessment program that provides objective information to help you make smart choices about your or a loved one’s ability to drive.

Who Can Benefit?

Our driving safety assessment services are appropriate for individuals with conditions such as:

  • Age-related illness or impairment
  • Amputation
  • Bone or joint disease
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Dementia
  • Head injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spina bifida
  • Stroke

About the Program

This occupational therapy program involves the evaluation of the critical occupational skills needed to drive a motor vehicle safely, which include:

  • Visual skills
  • Physical skills
  • Attention and concentration skills
  • Reaction time

Based on the results, we may recommend that your doctor refer you for a behind-the-wheel evaluation to determine the need for special equipment and/or follow-up training. The behind-the-wheel assessment evaluates your ability to operate the vehicle controls, respond quickly and accurately, obey traffic laws, and recognize and understand road signs and regulations. You can take this test with any Pennsylvania-certified driver trainer at a driving school. We will provide you with contact information.

Driving safety assessments are available at our Neuroscience Institute as well as our Suburban Pavilion and Willow Lakes outpatient locations.

How to Prepare

Obtain a referral from your doctor's office, as a referral is required. Allow one hour for the occupational therapy evaluation. Bring your eyeglasses/contact lenses.
